THORNDON HOUSE
Alteration & addition | Thorndon
This reconstruction of a petite workers cottage in Thorndon, Wellington creates additional, reconfigured and restored spaces to maximise the character home's compact site whilst retaining the essence of the existing house.

The project involved a high level of coordination with various consultants including an interior designer, geotechnical and structural engineers, archaeologist and thermal modelling consultant.

Situated within a flood zone, the house was lifted and temporarily relocated before new piles and foundations were laid. We extended the building’s footprint out the rear of the site to create new dining, kitchen, utility and bedroom space, opening out to the garden. Considered skylights were added to bring natural light into the house.
Along with bespoke joinery and a rich use of materials, the house has also been retrofitted with a holistic high quality heating and ventilation system, new thermal envelope, water collection capabilities and solar panels.
